In recent years Realism, after decades of oblivion and ostracism, has unexpectedly and suddenly become actual once again. What has determined this return is undoubtedly also the dramatic economic crisis in which we find ourselves. Reality, with the pervasion of the crisis, with all of its severity and rigidity, rather than giving way to our dreams or to our desires has once again and irresistibly come knocking on Europe’s doors. Obviously enough, this need to return to the real could only have resulted in a philosophical theorisation. With his Manifesto for New Realism which counters the postmodernist vulgate according to which “there are no facts, but only interpretations”, Maurizio Ferraris last year set in motion a debate that has involved a great number of philosophers and intellectuals, a debate that continues to be given ample space in the cultural pages of Italy’s most important newspapers and periodicals. mehr
